BMW is forging ahead with its model offensive in the luxury segment with the presentation of an open-top sports car which explores the highest reaches of dynamic flair, emotionality and exclusivity. The new BMW 8 Series Convertible blends ultra-sporty driving properties with distinctive design elegance and an extremely exclusive taste of driving pleasure in an open-top four-seater. The newly developed soft-top roof enhances the two-door car’s low, sporting lines when closed – and its sweeping elegance once open. The powertrain and chassis technology developed for the BMW 8 Series was tuned on the race track as well as the road. It serves up impressive performance attributes and peerless levels of poise and assurance, all of which are experienced with even greater intensity when the sun and wind are invited in. Model-specific equipment features designed to enhance comfort and state-of-the-art innovations when it comes to control & operation, driver assistance and connectivity serve up an open-top experience as modern as it is luxurious.
The growth of the BMW 8 Series range to include an open-top sports car for the luxury segment once again augments the brand’s presence in this vehicle class. The expansion of its luxury car portfolio is one of the future-focused areas the BMW Group has identified – as part of its NUMBER ONE > NEXT strategy – to secure the company’s long-term growth. The distinctive character profile of the new BMW 8 Series Convertible allows it to put down a particularly attractive marker in this market segment and win over new target groups in the process. The open-top model will be produced alongside the BMW 8 Series Coupe at BMW Plant Dingolfing. The Bavarian facility is the traditional birthplace of the BMW 7 Series Sedan and boasts outstanding expertise in the manufacture of luxury cars. The worldwide market launch of the new BMW 8 Series Convertible will begin in March 2019.
Exterior design: powerful use of forms, distinctive lines.
The brand’s new design language employs a small number of precisely drawn lines and generous surfacing to give the new BMW 8 Series Convertible a sporting yet elegant exterior appearance. Powerfully curved surfaces showcase the sports car’s athletic character. The body cuts a dynamically stretched figure with the roof down especially, but its distinctive lines are also in evidence when the soft-top is closed.
The compact fabric roof extends less far into the rear end than the roofline of the BMW 8 Series Coupe, creating a prominently stepped silhouette which accentuates the deck-like rear end of the BMW 8 Series Convertible to impressive effect.
The proportions of the new BMW 8 Series Convertible reveal a sports car that rides close to the road. With an exterior length of 4,843 millimetres, width of 1,902 millimetres and height of 1,339 millimetres, plus a 2,822-millimetre wheelbase and track widths of 1,619 millimetres (front) and 1,642 millimetres (rear), its dimensions match those of the BMW 8 Series Coupe almost exactly. The singular elegance of the luxurious convertible therefore shares centre stage with its clearly advertised dynamic allure and emotionally engaging performance attributes.
Taut soft-top roof with fully-electric operation.
The driver and passengers on board the new BMW 8 Series Convertible are protected from the elements by a classical soft-top. The multi-layered roof stands out with its weight-minimising design and superb acoustic insulation. The folding construction pulls taut over the interior when closed, lending the car a coupe-like silhouette. Added to which, the innovative roof minimises wind noise.
When opened, the soft-top stows away under a sophisticated cover whose surface structure and stitching matches those of the instrument panel and interior door/side panel trim. The result is an all-encompassing look for the interior. Two subtle domes at the level of the rear seats reprise the “double-bubble” contouring reminiscent of classical sports cars, which are also integrated into the roof surface of the BMW 8 Series Coupe. The surrounds of the soft-top lid are High-gloss Black as standard and fit flush with the side window borders.
The new BMW 8 Series Convertible’s roof opens and closes fully automatically and at the touch of a button located in the control panel on the centre console. 15 seconds is all it takes. The extremely hushed roof operation can be activated with the car travelling at up to 50 km/h (31 mph). The new BMW 8 Series Convertible comes with a black soft-top as standard, with an Anthracite Silver effect variant available as an option.
A sports car with a distinctive aura.
The new BMW 8 Series Convertible’s richly exclusive take on the sporting aesthetic imbues it with a very distinctive aura. The new BMW design language exudes modernity, precision and emotionality, and creates a dynamic and simultaneously graceful appearance. Shining a vivid spotlight on the car’s standout sporting ability is the protruding front apron with large air intakes. These make an even more dominant impression on the BMW M850i xDrive Convertible (as standard) and BMW 840d xDrive Convertible (as part of the optional M Sport package). A single-piece surround frames the two elements of the low-set BMW kidney grille, whose hexagonal outline widens lower down. The extremely slim headlight units extend far into the car’s flanks. The standard LED headlights generate daytime running light, low beam and high beam light from both light tubes, ensuring the signature BMW look is on display at all times. The optional BMW Laserlight with variable road illumination and Selective Beam generates a high-beam range of around 600 metres. Blue accents inside the twin headlights and “BMW Laser” lettering signal the presence of this highly advanced lighting technology.
The expressive design of the flank surfaces is pleasingly prominent with the roof both open and closed. Precise character lines lend structure to the generously proportioned surfaces and trace the path of the airflow between the front and rear wheels. The tapered surfaces around the front wheels and doors spread out in muscular fashion at the top of the rear wheels. Discreet yet extremely muscular contouring marks out the surfacing above the rear wheels as the flanks transition into the rear end.
The tail of the new BMW 8 Series Convertible also paints a sporty, powerful picture. The compartment for the soft-top roof causes the trailing edge of the car’s body to be rather higher than that of the BMW 8 Series Coupe. With the roof down, in particular, the rear end appears extremely flat and low to the road. In addition, horizontal lines and light units extending a long way into the flanks accentuate the width of the car. The third brake light embedded in the boot lid also plays a role in the car’s low-slung appeal. Other model-specific features include a brace of contour lines on the boot lid which mirror the direction of the air as it flows over the car. The rear lights are all-LED, the L shape familiar from BMW models underscored by the line of the taillight bar, which lights up uniformly. Twin exhaust tailpipes (trapezoidal on the BMW M850i xDrive Convertible) round off the lower section of the rear apron.
Aerodynamics and weight carefully optimised.
An almost fully sealed underbody, active air flap control with adjustable kidney grille slats and Air Curtains in the front apron optimise the new BMW 8 Series Convertible’s aerodynamics. Added to which, narrow exterior mirror bases mounted directly on the side-window weather strips reduce the car’s drag coefficient. The front spoiler extension on the BMW M850i xDrive Convertible underlines its rigorously aerodynamics-focused design.
An intelligent mixture of materials helps to reconcile exacting and conflicting demands when it comes to combining body rigidity with minimised weight. The use of high-strength steels and aluminium in the body structure plays a key role here, similarly the construction of the soft-top roof and use of carbon-fibre-reinforced plastic (CFRP) around the centre tunnel. The focus on exceptional body rigidity for the vehicle concept underpinning the BMW 8 Series models means that only a small number of additional convertible-specific and weight-increasing measures were required. These are restricted to additional cross struts and a specifically designed shear panel for the underbody.
M Sport package, Carbon package and Chrome Line Exterior with striking design features.
As well as the extremely large air intakes in the front apron, a strikingly sculpted rear apron and bespoke side skirts, the M Sport package available for the new BMW 840d xDrive Convertible also comprises a host of other design features which underscore the car’s dynamic character – notably Air Breathers finished in Pearl-effect Chrome on the inside, exhaust tailpipe embellishers in light chrome and a rear diffuser in Dark Shadow. The fronts of the kidney grille slats come in a neatly coordinated Aluminium matt.
Among the additional visual accents included as part of the M Technic Sport Package for the BMW 840d xDrive Convertible is extended BMW Individual high-gloss Shadow Line trim, which encompasses kidney grille slats in High-gloss Black and the grille frame, Air Breather inlays and exhaust system’s tailpipe embellishers in Black Chrome.
The new BMW M850i xDrive Convertible also underlines its individuality with numerous model-specific exterior appointments. The aerodynamically optimised body elements provided by the M Sport package combine with both a front spoiler extension and exclusive design accents in Cerium Grey. The features finished in this striking colour include the BMW kidney grille surround and slats, the exterior mirror covers, the Air Breather inlays, the tailpipe embellishers, the M logo on the front flanks and the model badge on the rear. Customers can also specify a Carbon package as an option, which brings air intake bars, exterior mirror covers and a rear apron insert that houses the exhaust tailpipes – all made from CFRP.
The optional Chrome Line Exterior provides further scope for individualising the outside of the car. Here, the side window graphic and exterior mirror bases come in chrome, while High-gloss Chrome is preferred for the surround and slats of the BMW kidney grille and – on the BMW M850i xDrive Convertible – the exhaust tailpipe embellishers.
Exclusive paint finishes from BMW Individual.
The new BMW 8 Series Convertible will be launched with a choice of one non-metallic and six metallic exterior paint finishes that underscore either the defiantly sporty or elegantly luxurious character of the two-door model. Carbon Black metallic and Barcelona Blue metallic will be offered as additional exterior colours for the BMW M850i xDrive Convertible and in conjunction with the M Sport package. The wide choice of BMW Individual paint finishes and BMW Individual special paint finishes available for the new BMW 8 Series Convertible at launch or shortly afterwards all create a particularly exclusive look. This selection also includes BMW Individual matt paint finishes with a satiny surface and the extra impact of the Frozen Bluestone metallic shade.
Interior and equipment. The height of elegance and distinctive luxury.
The new BMW 8 Series Convertible has been created to provide sporty performance and a luxurious open-top driving experience. One of the factors contributing to the driving enjoyment offered by this new convertible for the luxury segment is the design of the high-quality interior, with its precisely crafted details. The cohesive harmony between the exterior and interior is revealed particularly effectively when the soft-top is down. The occupants of the four seats are surrounded by the sweeping flow of the instrument panel, the door shoulders, the shoulder area around the rear seats and the soft-top compartment cover. Flush joints between the side channel seals and the surround of the soft-top compartment underline the harmonious transition from front to rear.
The entire ambience of the interior conveys the characteristic dynamic attributes of a sports car combined with the heights of elegance and distinctive luxury. These qualities are enhanced by the coordinated surface textures and the careful choice of materials for the interface between the instrument panel and the door trims. A fulled leather trim is standard for the instrument panel and door shoulders of the new BMW 8 Series Convertible. Visual unity is also maintained by the electroplated surfaces of the side air vent surrounds and the accent strips near the door openers. These sport a “closed clasp” design that allows them to be integrated in a particularly stylish manner.
Longitudinally oriented lines convey dynamism.
Another typical sports-car trait is to be found in the lengthways orientation of all the car’s lines, which direct the gaze forward towards the road. The standard equipment of the new BMW 8 Series Convertible includes a leather sports steering wheel with multifunction buttons and shift paddles for manual gear selection. In the BMW M850i xDrive Convertible, the driver has an M leather steering wheel as standard.
The focus on sporty driving is also reflected in a wide centre console which rises up towards the instrument panel and clearly separates the driver and front passenger areas. Accommodated at the front in a clear, tiered layout are the audio control unit and its function buttons, the air conditioning control panel with its panel of buttons, the displays and central air vents for the air conditioning, and the freestanding, frameless Control Display.
The clear arrangement of the controls in a central function cluster also helps the driver to focus on what’s happening on the road ahead. As well as the transmission’s selector lever and the iDrive Controller, the centre console also accommodates the Driving Experience Control switch and the engine start/stop button, all arranged within a newly designed function cluster with active haptic feedback. The button to initiate the soft-top motor is also situated in the centre console control panel. Another panel of buttons in the lower part of the instrument panel between the steering wheel and the driver’s door is used to control the light functions.
The clear structure of the interior provides a clear showcase for the high-quality materials. The use of trim finishers, for instance, is restricted to the transition between the centre console and the instrument panel. The stainless steel mesh design featured as standard in the new BMW M850i xDrive Convertible gives the trim finisher a technically sophisticated appearance. The new BMW 840d xDrive Convertible, meanwhile, comes with Aluminium Mesh Effect Dark trim as standard. The Fineline Copper Effect high-gloss and Ash Grain Metallic Grey high-gloss fine wood trims are also optionally available. Moreover, the range of highly exclusive options from BMW Individual includes the Piano Finish Black trim variant and fine wood variant Black Ash Silver Effect high-gloss.
The standard ambient lighting emphasises the forward-focused lines inside the car to striking effect. Indirect illumination of the contour lines running along the centre console and the door shoulders by means of precisely positioned LED optical fibres creates a both dynamic and exclusive mood. The colour of the light can be changed via the iDrive menu. In addition to this, the Dynamic interior light function emits pulsating light signals in specific situations. These signals appear on the inner panelling of an open door when the engine is running and on the instrument panel in response to an incoming phone call.
Leather upholstery and electric seat adjustment as standard.
High levels of long-distance comfort and excellent lateral support during fast cornering are key characteristics of the newly developed sports seats fitted as standard in the BMW 840d xDrive Convertible. The head restraints are visually integrated into the backrests and can be adjusted as required both for height and fore/aft positioning. Also standard is electrical adjustment of the seat position including memory function for both driver and front passenger seat. A part-electric folding function included for the front seat backrests is activated using a high-quality leather strap located on each seatback and facilitates convenient entry and exit for the rear passengers.
The sports seats are upholstered as standard in Vernasca leather. The list of optional extras includes BMW Individual Merino leather trim with extended appointments as well as BMW Individual Merino full leather trim. Each of these comes in a choice of Black, Cognac or Ivory White, as well as a variety of particularly striking two-tone colour schemes. Decorative stitching in a contrasting colour accentuates both the sporting contours of the seats and the individual design of the rear items. The Sun Reflective Technology used in conjunction with the dark colour versions of the leather upholstery reduces surface heating caused by bright sunshine.
The new BMW M850i xDrive Convertible is equipped as standard with multifunction seats featuring extra adjustment options, increased lateral support and even better comfort characteristics. They also offer the driver and front passenger the possibility of adjusting the backrest width and thigh support as desired. The multifunction seats are also fitted with lumbar support. Merino leather trim with extended appointments featuring particularly sophisticated contrast stitching and a special perforation pattern is standard on the multifunction seats in the BMW M850i xDrive Convertible.
Newly designed climate seats for the driver and front passenger are available as an upgrade to the standard heated seats. The cooled air is sucked in from the interior then guided along the body to the seats’ built-in fans for particularly effective temperature control of the seat cushions and backrests. Other optional extras include a Heat Comfort package with heated armrests on the doors and centre console for the driver and front passenger, and a heated steering wheel.
Wind deflector as standard, neck warmer as an option.
The luxuriously sporty interior design of the new BMW 8 Series Convertible is complemented by a number of equipment items which are specific to this model and make open-top driving even more enjoyable. Standard equipment includes a high-quality wind deflector which can be set up in the rear-seat area to prevent unwanted air turbulence when driving with the top down. Sockets discreetly integrated in the rear compartment’s shoulder areas allow the wind deflector to be secured easily. When not required, the wind deflector can be folded to half its full size and stowed in the boot.
For an even greater feel-good factor when driving with the top down in cooler weather, the new BMW 8 Series Convertible is available with optional neck warmers. Integrated into the driver and front passenger head restraints, these optional air outlets provide a pleasant warming effect. The strength of the air flow can be set to three different levels by means of a button in the control panel on the centre console and also adjusts automatically to the car’s speed.
Another special feature specific to the new BMW 8 Series Convertible is the rollover protection system. This is activated automatically the moment the data analysed by the central safety electronics indicate there is a risk of the car turning over. The system comprises two high-strength aluminium rollover bars fitted out of sight behind the rear head restraints of the new BMW 8 Series Convertible. In the event of danger, the pre-tensioned rollover bars are extended by a pyrotechnic charge in fractions of a second to form – in conjunction with the extremely rigid windscreen surround – a survival space for the vehicle occupants.
Folding rear-seat backrests and through-loading facility as standard.
There are large door pockets, a roomy glove compartment, two cupholders under the centre console’s trim finisher and a large storage compartment under the armrest’s longitudinally divided cover flaps for stowing travel accessories, beverages and other items. The rear-seat backrest of the new BMW 8 Series Convertible can be split 50 : 50 as standard, both elements folding independently of each other. The folding mechanism is released by means of levers inside the luggage compartment.
Thanks to the through-loading facility, the capacity of the luggage compartment can be extended as required. With the soft-top closed, the stowage capacity is 350 litres. In order to ensure the load compartment offers as much space and flexibility as possible at all times, the soft-top compartment can be lifted and the through-loading facility used even when driving with the top down. Automatic boot lid operation is also a standard feature on the new BMW 8 Series Convertible, while the Comfort Access option permits hands-free opening and closing of the boot lid.
BMW M Performance model and M Sport package with exclusive interior features.
Both standard specification for the new BMW M850i xDrive Convertible and the M Sport package for the new BMW 840d xDrive Convertible contain exclusive design features and options for additional enhancement of the dynamic driving experience. In addition to multifunction seats and the M leather steering wheel, these also include BMW Individual Merino leather trim with extended appointments in an exclusive Black with piping in BMW M GmbH colours. There is also an anthracite BMW Individual headliner, M pedals, an M driver’s footrest and floor mats with special M surrounds to inject the cabin with distinctly sporty flair.
The illuminated door sills and the display in the instrument cluster bear the BMW M Performance model badge and M logo respectively. In conjunction with the M Technic Sport Package, the exclusive interior design of the BMW 840d xDrive Convertible is supplemented by black seat belts with accent stripes in M GmbH colours.
High-end options increase comfort and driving enjoyment.
A wide array of top-quality optional extras is available to bring the comfort, driving enjoyment and ambience of luxury aboard the new BMW 8 Series Convertible even more emphatically to the fore. The standard Harman Kardon Surround Sound System features 12 speakers and speed-sensitive volume control for excellent listening enjoyment. Available as an option, the Bowers & Wilkins Diamond Surround Sound System comprises the brand’s unrivalled Diamond loudspeaker technology, a fully active 16-channel amplifier with an output of 1,375 watts, dynamic equalizing and 12 partly illuminated speakers with stainless steel surrounds. This system delivers a beautifully precise and multifaceted acoustic experience, whose pristine quality can be enjoyed in equal measure from all seats in the new BMW 8 Series Convertible.
Thanks to the option of telephony with wireless charging, it is possible to charge compatible mobile phones without the need for a cable. The BMW Display Key lets drivers stay in touch with their BMW 8 Series Convertible at all times. Besides indicating the fuel level and service-related information, the colour display is also able to show whether the doors and windows of the car are closed or locked.
The optional glass applications for selected controls add both visual and tactile highlights to the interior design. This option, available for the transmission’s selector lever, the iDrive Controller, the start/stop button and the volume control for the audio system, comprises finely polished glass elements in a contemporary style which are as appealing to the eye as they are to the touch. An illuminated ‘8’ can be seen through the glass surface of the selector lever.
Engines, transmission and BMW xDrive. Masterful performance for an exclusive driving experience.
Two attractive power units will be available for the new BMW 8 Series Convertible from launch, both of which impress in their own individual ways on a platform of supreme power delivery – and, in so doing, reveal the full breadth of the open-top four-seater’s character. The new BMW M850i Convertible wears the tag of high-calibre sports car with particular ease. It is powered by a latest-generation V8 engine developing 390 kW/530 hp. The unit’s unmistakable eight-cylinder character is highlighted both in the imposing fashion in which it serves up its power and the emotionally lavish engine note that provides the soundtrack. Cue a driving experience of rare allure and awe – especially with the roof down. Torque on tap from low in the engine speed range combined with eye-catching efficiency and an appetite for covering long distances mark out the six-cylinder in-line diesel engine at the heart of the new BMW 840d xDrive Convertible. With maximum output of 235 kW/320 hp and a degree of smoothness head and shoulders beyond what you would expect from a diesel engine, it follows the family lead in offering driving pleasure of satisfying variety; pleasurable cruising, dynamic sprints and a relaxed touring ambience are all on the menu.
Power transfer in the two models is via the latest version of the eight-speed Steptronic Sport transmission, which allows the driver to change gears manually using shift buttons on the steering wheel as standard. The engine’s power is fed through to the road surface by the latest generation of the BMW xDrive system. The rear-wheel-biased set-up of the intelligent all-wheel-drive system provides exceptional agility and precision in dynamic driving situations, as does the M Sport differential with active locking function at the rear axle fitted as standard on the BMW M850i xDrive Convertible.
V8 engine: imposing power, characterful soundtrack.
A 4.4-litre eight-cylinder engine from the latest crop infuses the new BMW M850i xDrive Convertible with imposing power delivery, backed by a soundtrack that can usefully be described as rich in character. The new V8 seizes the attention with a 50 kW/68 hp hike in output over its predecessor (to 390 kW/530 hp) achieved without any increase in weight, plus a 100 Nm (74 lb-ft) boost in peak torque to 750 Nm (553 lb-ft).
The attendant M Performance TwinPower Turbo technology includes two twin-scroll turbochargers with charge air cooling nestling in the V between the cylinder banks, High Precision Injection, VALVETRONIC fully variable valve control and Double-VANOS variable camshaft timing.
The far-reaching new measures help to produce instantaneous power delivery and sustained thrust – accompanied by a marvellously captivating soundtrack, even greater impact by the standard flap-controlled M sports exhaust system. The new V8 serves up peak torque between 1,800 and 4,600 rpm and generates maximum output between 5,500 and 6,000 rpm. The BMW M850i xDrive Convertible sprints from 0 to 100 km/h (62 mph) in just 3.9 seconds. Larger catalytic converters mounted close to the engine and a gasoline particulate filter minimise the emissions of the new V8 engine, which meets all the relevant exhaust emission standards worldwide, including the Euro 6d-TEMP norm.
Six-cylinder in-line diesel engine brimming with power and efficiency.
The new BMW 840d xDrive Convertible benefits from a type of engine no other car in its segment can offer – a 3.0-litre straight-six diesel. The unit’s BMW TwinPower Turbo technology comprises multi-stage turbocharging and common-rail direction injection with piezo injector. These generate maximum pressure of 2,500 bar to supply fuel to the engine in extremely precise quantities and ensure clean combustion. With maximum output of 235 kW/320 hp at 4,400 rpm and peak torque of 680 Nm (501 lb-ft) on tap between 1,750 and 2,250 rpm, the six-cylinder in-line diesel develops majestic pulling power.
With its inimitable performance characteristics, this power unit encourages relaxed cruising at low engine speeds and powerful mid-range sprints in equal measure. Pressing the accelerator hard enables a 0 to 100 km/h (62 mph) dash in 5.2 seconds – as the model-specific sports exhaust system runs through its full-blooded acoustic repertoire. The engine also represents a compelling proposition over long distances, displaying tremendous refinement and exemplary efficiency – the latter reflected in average fuel consumption of 6.3 – 5.9 litres per 100 kilometres* (44.8 – 47.9 mpg imp) and CO2 emissions of 165 – 155 grams per kilometre*. Thanks to exhaust gas treatment using BMW BluePerformance technology (including an SCR catalyst with AdBlue injection), the new BMW 840d xDrive Convertible fulfils the stipulations of the Euro 6d-TEMP standard.
Eight-speed Steptronic transmission with gearshift paddles on the steering wheel.
Both engines deliver their power through the latest version of the eight-speed Steptronic Sport transmission. When driving in higher gears, in particular, the transmission uses its wider gear spacing to keep engine speeds low and, in so doing, reduce fuel consumption. Added to which, the latest generation of the eight-speed Steptronic Sport has reduced torque converter slip and further developed torsion dampers that reduce rotational irregularities within the powertrain and therefore help to optimise both driving comfort and shift smoothness.
The transmission’s optimised hydraulic control plays a key role in sharpening the shift dynamics. Manual gear changes can be carried out using the standard shift paddles on the steering wheel. The Launch Control function allows the car to power off the line with optimal traction and unbeatable dynamic flair.
Intelligent connectivity enhances dynamics and efficiency.
The eight-speed Steptronic Sport transmission’s control unit can adapt the shift strategy to the situation at hand using intelligent connectivity. Data from the standard Navigation system Professional is used to shift down early when approaching a junction in order to use the engine braking effect to slow the car down or avoid unnecessary gear shifts between two bends that follow in quick succession.
Intelligent connectivity also enhances the efficiency of the drive system. The new BMW 8 Series Convertible features situation-based control of the Auto Start Stop function using data collected from the navigation system and the cameras and radar sensors of the standard/optional driver assistance systems. In this way, inefficient engine shutdown – for example when stopping briefly at junctions or roundabouts – can be prevented. The movement of vehicles ahead is also registered in order to determine the ideal moment for stopping and starting the engine. Also controlled intelligently is the coasting function, which decouples the powertrain at speeds between 15 and 160 km/h (9 and 99 mph) whenever the driver lifts their foot off the accelerator.
The changeover to coasting mode only takes place in driving situations in which it appears worthwhile and doesn’t compromise comfort or performance. The coasting function is available when ECO Pro mode – or also COMFORT mode in the BMW 840d xDrive Convertible – is engaged using the Driving Experience Control switch.

The latest version of the BMW xDrive intelligent all-wheel-drive system fitted in the new BMW 8 Series Convertible stands out with its further improved efficiency. Power is split as required at all times using an electronically controlled multi-plate clutch that is interlinked with the powertrain and chassis systems on the new BMW 8 Series Convertible. With its rapid, precise and fully variable distribution of drive torque between the front and rear wheels, it maximises traction and handling stability not only when driving in adverse road conditions, but in highly dynamic driving situations too.
The xDrive system’s rear-biased set-up, which is even notable in challenging driving situations, guarantees the sort of driving experience for which BMW sports cars are renowned. When taking corners at speed, for example, just the right amount of extra drive force is transferred to the rear wheels to help the car turn into the bend with supreme accuracy. The fact that the all-wheel-drive system has been specifically designed for dynamic handling is particularly noticeable in the SPORT and SPORT+ modes of the Driving Experience Control switch.
The M Sport differential likewise fitted as standard in the new BMW M850i xDrive Convertible further enhances the car’s dynamic driving properties. The new BMW 8 Series Convertible comes equipped with chassis technology whose design principle and set-up are geared squarely to producing a unique driving experience that blends sports-car agility and dynamism with luxurious levels of comfort. This is achieved by capitalising on both the fundamental characteristics of the vehicle’s design – minimised weight, a low centre of gravity and well-balanced weight distribution, plus an optimum wheelbase, wide tracks, a stiff body structure and excellent aerodynamics – and the powertrain technology’s dynamic capabilities. The new BMW 8 Series Convertible offers a broad performance repertoire that is unrivalled in this segment and ranges from intoxicating sportiness to supreme ride comfort.
Chassis technology sharpened with racing know-how.
The chassis technology developed for the new BMW 8 Series Convertible consists of a double-wishbone front axle, a five-link rear axle, Electric Power Steering and an exceptionally powerful braking system. The suspension kinematics and elastokinematics have been carefully adapted to the demands of a highly dynamic driving style, delivering maximum agility, precision and performance.
Moreover, the racing know-how of BMW M GmbH was used for detailed modifications and enhancements as well as the overall set-up. Torsion struts on the front axle and a shear panel incorporated on the rear axle optimise stiffness and the connection of suspension components to the body. Independent rubber bearings – which increase camber stiffness – and additional damping plates at the rear axle further enhance the suspension’s dynamic baseline set-up. Special wheel carriers and wishbones allow camber values on both axles to be raised as far as possible. This significantly increases the car’s ability to put down power through high-speed corners.
Adaptive M suspension and Integral Active Steering as standard.
The new BMW 8 Series Convertible is fitted as standard with Adaptive M suspension including electronically controlled dampers. The compression and rebound stages are adjusted continuously and independently. This facilitates finely metered spring and damping responses, providing the driver with only relevant information about the road surface.
The extremely stiff suspension springs reduce roll tendency and allow the dampers to stabilise the wheels as much as possible, avoiding traction losses caused by bumps and ruts in the road surface. The electronically controlled dampers respond adaptively to both road surface conditions and driving style.
Damping characteristics can be adjusted via the Driving Experience Control switch. SPORT and SPORT+ modes activate optimal responses for dynamic handling. This is noticeably different from the comfort-oriented damper setting in ECO Pro and COMFORT modes.
The likewise standard Integral Active Steering reduces the car’s turning circle when manoeuvring, increases agility at moderate speeds and optimises poise and assurance when changing lanes and cornering at high speeds. The system combines Servotronic speed-sensitive power assistance and a variable steering ratio at the front wheels with a steering rear axle.
By actively turning the rear wheels, the Integral Active Steering considerably enhances both the agility and cornering dynamics of the new BMW 8 Series Convertible. To this end, the rear wheels are steered in the opposite direction to the front wheels at speeds up to 72 km/h (45 mph). At higher speeds, the steering angle of the rear wheels matches that of the front wheels, ensuring the car adopts the course determined by the driver even more willingly and accurately. Integral Active Steering therefore fosters a sporty and active driving style to great effect.
Active roll stabilisation enhances agility and dynamics.
Active roll stabilisation, which is available for the new BMW M850i xDrive Convertible as part of the optional Adaptive M suspension Professional, further hones the car’s sporty handling characteristics. Electric swivel motors on the front and rear axles ensure particularly fast and precise compensation of lateral forces during dynamic driving manoeuvres. Active roll stabilisation has an exceptionally sporty set-up and responds adaptively to changing requirements. It optimises agility and directional stability on turn-in and helps line the car up as neatly as possible for dynamic acceleration out of corners. The reduced body movement also means fast evasive manoeuvres can be executed with great assurance.
The system also increases comfort when driving straight ahead by decoupling the permanent connection between the wheels of an axle. By stabilising the wheel that requires it, the system is extremely effective in counteracting disruptive forces resulting from road surface imperfections on one side of the car.
Model-specific M Sport braking systems, light-alloy wheels with mixed-size high-performance tyres.
The braking systems fitted in the new BMW 8 Series Convertible are notable for their tremendous stopping power, high thermal stability, fast response and excellent feel. All versions combine four-piston, fixed-calliper brakes at the front and single-piston, floating-calliper brakes at the rear. The electronic parking brake – operated by means of a button located on the centre console – is integrated into the rear brake callipers.
The M Sport package optionally available for the BMW 840d xDrive Convertible includes an M Sport braking system with 374 mm discs. And when specified with the optional M Technic Sport Package, the BMW 840d xDrive Convertible comes with the 395 mm brake discs fitted on the BMW M850i xDrive Convertible as standard. Both versions of the M Sport braking system are recognisable by their blue callipers bearing the M logo.
The performance-maximising chassis technology featured in the new BMW M850i xDrive Convertible is rounded off by 20-inch M light-alloy wheels. These standard cast aluminium wheels in a Frozen Cerium Grey metallic finish are shod with 245/35 R20 high-performance tyres at the front and 275/30 R20 high-performance tyres at the rear. The tyres have been specially developed for the BMW 8 Series models. The new BMW 840d xDrive Convertible is also fitted with mixed-size tyres as standard. And for those situations where advanced assistance systems could serve to heighten the sense of driving pleasure, the new BMW 8 Series Convertible boasts an extraordinary array of standard and optional equipment features designed to enhance comfort and safety out on the road.
The driver assistance systems process camera images as well as the data gathered by ultrasonic and radar sensors to monitor the vehicle’s surroundings, to warn of potential hazards and to minimise the risk of an accident with corrective braking or steering inputs. These systems, with their groundbreaking technology, can provide effective assistance in complex driving situations in city traffic, for example, as well as when parking and manoeuvring. When driving longer distances, they ease the driver’s workload in monotonous driving conditions, such as traffic jams and heavy but moving traffic. The assistance systems available for the new BMW 8 Series Convertible represent the latest advances on the road to automated driving. The comprehensive range of functions on offer is further testimony to the new BMW 8 Series Convertible’s standing among its peers as an exceptionally progressive model.
Head-Up Display with extended content as standard.
The BMW Head-Up Display fitted as standard in the new BMW 8 Series Convertible helps to focus the driver’s attention on the road ahead. It projects driving-related information onto the windscreen in the form of full-colour graphics. When driving with the Driving Experience Control switch in SPORT or SPORT+ mode, the Head-Up Display also indicates the engine speed. Plus, the new BMW 8 Series Convertible adds a digital Optimum Shift Indicator as an aid for the sports-minded driver.
Another item on the standard equipment list is Cruise Control with braking function, which is available from 30 km/h (19 mph) up to top speed. The optionally available Active Cruise Control system with Stop & Go function can be used at speeds up to 210 km/h (130 mph) and maintains the desired speed while taking not only the traffic situation into account, but also the minimum distance from vehicles ahead selected by the driver. Camera images and data from radar sensors are used for distance control. To allow the set speed to be adapted as appropriate, the speed limits indicated by the Speed Limit Info including No Passing Info display traffic sign recognition system can be imported automatically or manually, with a preset adjustment of up to 15 km/h (9 mph). The system deftly adapts the car’s speed to the changing traffic situation, and is capable of braking it to a standstill if required, then pulling away again automatically.
The distance information shown in the Head-Up Display is another of the system’s features. This function helps the driver to keep at a predetermined distance from the vehicle ahead when cruise and distance control are not activated.
Driving Assistant to help the driver stay in lane, change lane and avoid collisions.
The Driving Assistant also forms part of the optional specification for the new BMW 8 Series Convertible. This package of features is again based on camera and radar technology and includes the Lane Departure Warning and Lane Change Warning systems, which are operational from 70 to 210 km/h (44 – 130 mph) and from 20 km/h (12 mph) up to top speed respectively, and help the driver guide the vehicle back onto the correct path with an active turn of the steering wheel.
The Driving Assistant also comprises the Collision Warning and Pedestrian Warning system with City Braking function, which can bring the vehicle to a halt to either avoid a collision or minimise its consequences, depending on the situation. The Speed Limit Info system, Rear Cross Traffic Alert and Rear Collision warning are also all fitted as part of the standard-specification Driving Assistant.
Driving Assistant Professional: the complete package for comfortable and safe driving.
The optional Driving Assistant Professional offers particularly far-reaching assistance for comfortable and safe driving. In addition to Active Cruise Control with Stop & Go function, this comprehensive package also includes the Steering and lane control assistant. To allow convenient activation of the two systems, the BMW 8 Series Convertible is fitted with a special button on the standard multifunction steering wheel for switching on the Active Cruise Control and Steering and lane control assistant simultaneously. A mode button allows the driver to switch to using cruise control on its own.
Another component of the Driving Assistant Professional is the Lane Keeping Assistant with active side collision protection. The Driving Assistant Professional also includes the evasion aid, extended Cross Traffic Alert – which also reduces the risk of a collision when manoeuvring forwards – and as the Priority warning and Wrong-way warning systems.
Another item on the list of optional extras is the BMW Night Vision system comprising pedestrian and animal detection and a marker light. It relays a real-time video image to the Control Display showing people, larger animals and other objects that give off heat. Any objects detected are additionally illuminated using the headlights’ marker light function.
Making parking, manoeuvring and reversing easier than ever.
Drivers of the new BMW 8 Series Convertible also receive effective assistance when parking and manoeuvring, as the list of standard equipment includes not only Park Distance Control (PDC) with sensors at both the front and rear, but also the Parking Assistant for automatically selecting and manoeuvring into spaces parallel to the road. During the parking manoeuvre, the system controls the accelerator, brakes and steering as well as changing gear. In addition, it can be used for manoeuvring automatically out of parallel parking spaces, too.
The Parking Assistant’s range of functions also includes the Reversing Assistant, which helps the driver to exit parking spaces and manoeuvre within a confined space. The system assumes the task of steering when backing up by tracing the vehicle’s last forward movements in reverse. All the driver has to do is operate the accelerator and brake pedals and monitor the vehicle’s surroundings. A distance of up to 50 metres can be covered in this way at speeds of up to 9 km/h (5.5 mph). The system is deactivated if either of these values is exceeded.
The rear-view camera that also comes as standard is designed to afford drivers a clear all-round view, as are many of the functions included with the optional extra Parking Assistant Plus. With the help of the Top View, Panorama View and 3D View functions, a 360-degree image of the vehicle and its surroundings is shown on the Control Display from different perspectives. The Remote 3D View function additionally gives drivers the ability to call up a three-dimensional live image of their vehicle and its immediate vicinity on their smartphone.

Standard equipment for the new BMW 8 Series Convertible includes the BMW Intelligent Personal Assistant, an intelligent, digital helper that responds to the prompt “Hey BMW”. The BMW Group is set to revolutionise driving pleasure with the BMW Intelligent Personal Assistant, as it marks the start of a new era in which drivers will increasingly be able to operate their car, access its functions and obtain information simply by speaking. Updates that can be carried out seamlessly on a smartphone and in-car by Remote Software Upgrade will ensure the range of functions and capabilities on offer are continuously expanded.
BMWs acquire a digital personality.
The BMW Intelligent Personal Assistant learns routines and habits, and is subsequently able to apply them in the appropriate context. He helps the driver, learns their preferences and is familiar with the settings they like to have for the seat heating, for example, or the places they navigate to frequently (“Take me home”). One unique feature compared with other digital assistants of this type is the option of giving him a personally selected name (such as “Charlie”) to lend him even greater individuality and personality. Not only does the assistant await the driver’s every command, he’s always there to assist them and even provide casual conversation. He is familiar with the vehicle’s functions and is able to operate them as required. Saying “Hey BMW, I’m cold” will prompt the BMW Intelligent Personal Assistant to adjust the temperature inside the car accordingly. Ongoing improvement of the technology will enable him to learn more and more preferences and favourite settings in future. The assistant gets better at his job with every command given, every question asked and every setting made.
Always on board: the digital BMW expert.
The arrival of the BMW Intelligent Personal Assistant ensures there is always a genuine BMW professional on board. He is able to explain all sorts of different functions (“How does the High Beam Assistant work?”), provide current status information (“Is the oil level okay?”) and help answer questions (“What warning messages do I have?”). He knows the driver’s favourite settings, and can even activate a combination of them to enhance well-being. For instance, “Hey BMW, I feel tired” triggers a vitality programme that adjusts the lighting mood, music and temperature, among other things, in order to make the driver feel more awake.

The perfect co-driver.
It is, in short, the ideal co-driver and comes in particularly useful during everyday driving (“Hey BMW, how far can I drive before I need to refuel?”). Navigation can now be made simpler than ever, as the assistant will find somewhere to park at the journey’s destination, provide information on any traffic jams along the route and remind the driver when it is time to set off. He also learns destinations the customer drives to frequently. The assistant’s integration into Microsoft Office 365 and Skype for Business transforms the BMW 8 Series Convertible into a voice-controlled mobile office and enables him to join teleconferences at the driver’s request.
Turning passengers into co-drivers.
The new BMW 8 Series Convertible also lets passengers in the front and rear mould the driving experience in ways they never have done before. With the driver’s consent, they are able to connect their smartphone to the car using the Connected Command function and then use it to control selected functions. This converts the passengers into co-drivers able to ease the driver’s workload by checking out the journey’s route via BMW Connected, for example, or adjusting the on-board entertainment programme and climate control settings.
The BMW Intelligent Personal Assistant forms part of the standard specification in the new BMW 8 Series Convertible, together with the Live Cockpit Professional and the new BMW Operating System 7.0, and is included free of charge for the first three years. The scope of functions can be extended with the Connected Package Professional.
BMW Digital Key: turning the smartphone into a car key.
The BMW Digital Key employs Near Field Communication (NFC) technology to allow the new BMW 8 Series Convertible to be locked and unlocked from a smartphone, too, dispensing with the need for a conventional car key. Holding the smartphone up to the door handle opens the car. Once inside, the engine can be started as soon as the phone has been placed in the wireless charging smartphone tray. The additional digital keys accessible via BMW Connected offer unrivalled flexibility, as the driver can share them with up to five other people. The BMW Digital Key is available for all NFC-capable Samsung Galaxy smartphones running Android 8.0 or higher. Alternatively, customers can use the BMW Key Card. This sophisticated option also features NFC technology and so offers the same functionality as a suitably equipped smartphone.
Connected Navigation with new digital services.
“Connected Navigation” encompasses a number of digital services that are designed to turn seamless and contextual route planning both inside and outside the BMW into an even more sophisticated experience. In future, drivers of the new BMW 8 Series Convertible will be able to send destinations from various apps straight to their car’s navigation system. The key destinations will be stored in BMW Connected and synchronised with the car, so that the most important addresses can be accessed from any device at any time. One particularly helpful new feature is the Parking Space Assistant, which proposes various parking options to the driver in good time before the destination is reached. This service includes providing information on the nearest multi-storey car park as well as proposing routes offering a particularly good chance of finding a parking spot close to the destination. To help create the new Parking Space Assistant, the existing On-Street Parking Information and ParkNow services have been intelligently incorporated into its scope of functions.
Exactly the right information at just the right time: the BMW Operating System 7.0 display and control concept.
The newly designed screen grouping comprising the instrument cluster and Control Display, together with the inclusion of new functions, enables intuitive operation to be taken to the next level in the new BMW 8 Series Convertible, while helping drivers to concentrate even more effectively on the road ahead. The standard BMW Live Cockpit Professional comprises a fully digital, high-resolution instrument cluster behind the steering wheel with a screen diagonal of 12.3 inches and a Control Display measuring 10.25 inches across. This package of equipment also features an adaptive navigation system and a hard-drive-based multimedia system with 20 GB of memory.
The BMW Live Cockpit Professional brings the BMW Operating System 7.0 to the new BMW 8 Series Convertible. The operating system’s most recent incarnation boasts all-digital displays and is geared even more closely to the driver’s personal needs – with the aim of maximising their attention levels. The system’s clear presentation and structuring are designed to provide drivers with the right information at the right time, aided further by the customisable and personalised content. The redesigned information display in the centre of the instrument cluster now leaves enough room for an excerpt from the navigation map, for instance. In the main menu on the Control Display, the driver is able to create and individually configure up to ten pages, each showing two to four pads (tiles) with live content. Both the content and the graphics are personalised to an even greater degree, as illustrated by the vehicle mock-up that matches the actual model colour and equipment line. The intuitive multimodal interaction between driver and vehicle benefits from further improvement. The Control Display graphics adapt depending on the operating method, and the voice control system based on natural language understanding is better than ever before. Depending on the situation, the driver can choose from the familiar iDrive Controller, the steering wheel controls, touch control or voice control.
The Live Cockpit Professional is the key to being able to book digital services with total flexibility, as it means new or existing services can be added at any time. In future, BMW customers will be able to download additional digital services at a later date from the ConnectedDrive Store and install them in their car via Remote Software Upgrade. Services can be booked in this way for periods of three months, one year or three years.

The Remote Software Upgrade feature keeps the new BMW 8 Series Convertible right up to date with the latest software. All updates can be imported over the air, either on a smartphone via BMW Connected or directly into the car using its built-in SIM card. Installation is every bit as simple as a smartphone update. The content of the upgrades can vary, from new software services to improved vehicle functions.
